I am just starting out in options trading and have been reading everything I can for the last 2 yrs. I am at a point where I want to develop my system and backtest it. I wanted to focus on 4-5 markets. What are your comments regarding option trading with regards to the markets in each of the major groups I want to investigate further (I would like to pick one market from each of the following) ; 1. corn, wheat, soybeans 2. gold, silver 3. Jap. Yen, British Pound, D. Mark 4. T-bonds, T-notes, Eurodollars 5. Cotton, Sugar. I have narrowed down to this list with regards to option liquidity, margin req., diversification and volatility history (those that move to under 20% IV and those that can go higher than 20% IV). I have tied to stay away from the New York energy markets based on comments fr

Good work, Phil. The proverb's spelling and transaltion are spot on. Did you come up with this one after exchanging correspondence with me? (:-)) Does it mean you finally installed the Russian keyboard, or id it a copy from the Russian transalator? I think I can have some cyrylic fonts comming from CorelDraw. I'll come back with this shortly. Write to you soon. Andrew I like your new look website better than the old one - its more modern. Hi, I'm currently doing a study on options, and I wanted to know whther you know some cases of failures in companies using options, perhaps because they have been using speculative strategies rather than using option strategies to reduce risk. I know of one company LTCM, but I need to know others. If you have any info which you may feel will help please could you send it to me, i would be very grateful. I'm shopwing that options if used correctly will reduce risk but they can also be dangerous if not used properly!! Many Thanks Imran

Philip, I found your scribbling on the ratio to Butterfly very interesting,I am an amateur trader and having read many books on the various strategies, I find that few go that one step further in guiding the trader, in relatively simple terms, in the management and termination of a strategy. In my experience I have found that the graphic visualisation you use , comes after a while of breathing, sleeping and holidaying with the various strategies. If you have further insights and scriblings i would be most interested to read them, I believe that this is one mode of money making where there is always another perpspective or way of viewing a situation. Which can give you a more advantageous insight to the same strategy but with differnet applications. Regards Richard Whitley

Maybe this is partly due to the difficult markets. Still, business is slow at the moment and I am becoming increasingly distracted by my urge to trade both short and long (which I can't do for clients) on my own book - I use CFDs and only trade equities (although I am beginning to look at commodities). Phil, You probably don't remember me. I used to work on the overnight desk at Refco and used to bum a cigarette from you once and awhile. I came across your website inadvertantly while trawling the web. Four years ago I moved to England. I am now working as an oil trader for Phibro in London after working for JP Morgan NY for 5 years in their commodity derivative department. I thought I would at least say hello. I still speak with Randy Katzenstein every now and again. I hope you are well. Regards, William Fisher (Billy)

Phil, I just finished reading your studies on trader signatures and thought they were very interesting. I have been mapping my P&L for four years now. This is done as a matter of course to try and discipline my trading and learn from my mistakes. If I sent you a series of P&L would you comment on it and try and guess the trading style. Regards, William Fisher
